9th NASS Leadership: CSO tasks lawmakers against ethno-religious supremacy

Nigeria’s diversity and unity is at stake, as a political rights group tasks lawmakers-elect of the 9th National Assembly to resist the temptation of aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to foist on Nigeria, the conspiracy of ethno-religious supremacy, when it convenes to elect its leadership.

It is incumbent on the incoming federal lawmakers to emulate their colleagues in the previous assemblies since 1979, who had used the hallowed chambers of the parliament to demonstrate sensitivity to Nigeria’s diversity, said Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNDC) in statement by its Convener, Ariyo-Dare Atoye.

The group warned that the majority-take all approach of the Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba political players in the APC, their insensitivity to the religious orientation of the country and the emerging plot to condemn other component groups to a second-fiddle status in their own country, will spell doom for the nation.

“Every political administration since 1979 inclusive of the parliament, had made a conscious arrangement to ensure ethno-religious sensitivity, balancing and spread, in the filling of first-class political offices, until the coming of the APC which is trying to distort everything.

“Since May 29, 2015 when the administration came on board, the Muhammadu Buhari led APC has under different guise and contrived mechanisms ensured that only people of his tribe and religion lead and dominate every arm and strata of government, while using the Yorubas and a few others as pawns to justify some minimal spread.

“We have gotten to a level where we must say these things because they are real, they are happening and they will deepen our fault lines, create disenchantment and set this country up for instability in the nearest possible future, if we do not speak up to stop it.

“Every arrangement in the APC has favoured this emerging insensitive and divisive trend, and if not for the brave act of members of the 8th National Assembly who elected Yakubu Dogara a Christian and a minority as the Speaker of House of Representatives, it could have been worse for other groups.

“While it is obvious that the APC is insensitive to Nigeria’s diversity and spread, we therefore call on Representatives-elect and Senators-elect to put head together, show patriotism and ensure that the South, minorities, Christians are not condemned to play second-fiddle in Nigeria.

“A situation where the number one to four positions in Nigeria will all be from one religion or from the North is unacceptable, and it will lead to serious agitation, create resentment, deepen our fault lines and endanger our unity as a nation.

“We still have the opportunity to remedy this dangerous trend ahead of the 9th National Assembly, and we want the lawmakers-elect, the leadership in the country and political stakeholders to take a stand and save our country from this deepening ethno-religious supremacy,” said CDNDC.
