Since he bestrode the Osun political landscape like a colossus, Akin Ogunbiyi, Chairman, Mutual Benefits Assurance Company, Plc, has remained a factor.
It was thus predictable to see the ‘creme de la creme’ of the society even beyond his Osun state who came to honour the man of ideas when he celebrated his birthday with a colloquium on how to revamp the education sector last week.
The Atlantic Civic Centre, venue of the colloquium was jam packed.
From the Ooni of Ife,His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja 2, to Gen. Alani Akinrinade and former governor of the state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Even the man behind ‘Patito’s Gang’ and Director of Lagos Business School, Dr. Pat Utomi, was there to add pep talk to importance of education. It was a full house.
That education system in Osun state is in comatose is like stating the obvious. Year in, year out, the state of the Livingspring has continued to make the mockery of the technological knowhow in ‘Opon Imo ‘ that the former governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola bequeathed on the state. As at the last WAEC, Osun was number 29 on the list. This may have been responsible for the colloquium by the ‘Idera De Movement’ of Ogunbiyi.
Though, he lost the gubernatorial ticket to Senator Ademola Adeleke in the last election, Ogunbiyi the Yale and Harvard trained business Czar surely knows his onions. His activities before , during and after the election has positioned him as a rallying point of sort that 2022 now beckons.
The leadership of his party- the Peoples Democratic Party, may have found a worthy son in Ogunbiyi whom they are well pleased.

He then joined the Finance and Insurance Experts Limited – a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm. He is a pioneer Associate Director. Ogunbiyi is also a fellow of the Institute Directors, Nigeria. He serves on the board of the Infrastructure Bank Plc and other Companies. He is Chairman Of Mutual Benefits Assurance PLC.
On 23 July 2018, Ademola Adeleke emerged as the PDP candidate after defeating Ogunbiyi by seven votes.
As 2022 beckons, will Ogunbiyi throw his hat in the ring again? Will he mount the soapbox again? With the activities of his Idera De Movement and other groups across the state, it will be interesting if they choose Ogunbiyi, a man whose slender arm is full of kindness. And this may also give fillip to the PDP in its bid to return to the Abere Government House.
