The Developmental Initiatives ( TDI ), a coalition of conscientious civil society organisations across the nooks and crannies of the country, arose from an emergency national executives council session in Ibadan, Oyo State with a clarion call on Nigerian people and leaders to treasure the essence of living in peace and harmony as main requisites for socio-economic growths, sustainable national development and genuine People’s democratic governance.
The Moderator of TDI, Ms. Juliet Ngozi Iregbu said the organisation is concerned that after more than Nineteen (19) years of democratic rule since 1999, there seems to be a grand design consciously or inadvertently to de-accelerate the country’s flight to assure qualitative well-being and welfare for the people.
The organisation noted that the national economy for decades has been nose diving, battling with acute recession, stagnant if not retarded development as well as gross abuse of power through in imaginable, mind boggling grafts, insane looting of public treasury and morbid corruption. It observed that despite these burdens, the strenous efforts of the government for wholesome stability is unceasingly facing manifest, ferocious threats from destabilizing factors.
TDI thus, call for all hands to be on deck to pray, work for and insist on peace, tolerance as well as harmonious social co-existence as the only condition for continued positive advancement as we celebrate this season of Yuletide and New Year.
The Developmental Initiatives ( TDI) in council expressed apprehension that recent escalation of belligerent campaigns by the Boko Haram sects, the Shites religious group and ethnic nationalist bodies like the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB and the Niger Delta militants shall further exacerbate instabilities, ipso facto, hardships and sufferings in the country.
TDI pointed at the social dislocations caused by the Herdsmen and farmers in Benue and Plateau States as omnous signposts of destabilizing factors to the national polity.
It called for urgent Intervention by the government at all tiers, security agencies and pertinent community bodies on the looming threats of this clashes in the South West, South East zones particularly in Ekiti and Imo States.
It alerts the Herdsmen/farmers clash is not just security problem but equally a serious attack on food Security that may provoke fermine and starvation.
TDI noted with worried sense of patriotism that politicians are actively orchestrating some of these destabilisation crisis as they get intensely desperate to get or clinch on to political power by any devious means necessary.
“Many of them are already plotting for the 2023 general elections while the inks of last votings are yet to dry. They are ill-concern about ensuring any dividends for hapless citizens.
“The crisis of confidence rocking the ruling party, All Progressive Congress, APC with it’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole and the Governor of his Edo State, Godwin Obaseki who are at each others Jocular veins is a potential micro fire that can snowball into wild, national conflagration and consume not only fledgling democracy but millions of unwary, innocent Citizens.” She noted.
The Developmental Initiatives TDI, therefore enjoins all Nigerians to use the coming season to forge strong unity amongst each other.
It advised everyone no matter status or creed to embrace peace and harmonious co existence as the strongest pillar, basis, and conditions for prosperity, industrial growth and socio-economic advancement of our great nation.
