Insecurity:Borno Governor Urges FG To Recruit 100, 000 Fresh Hands Into The Nigerian Army To Fight Boko Haram

Governor Babagana Zulum of  Borno State on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to consider Mass Recruitment of 100,000 men into the Nigeria Army to help the fight against Boko haram terrorists in the Northeast region. 

 Governor Zulum stated that there’s need for a decisive action,especially in the area of manpower to win the war against the decade long Boko haram insurgency. 

The governor  made the call  when the House of Representatives Committee on Defence visited him  at the Government House,  Maiduguri . 

He advise the Federal Government to consider employing 50,000 men from Borno State  to join the Nigeria Military. 

” There’s need to recruit 50,000 young men from Borno,  we have able bodied young men that can join the Nigeria armed forces on an ad-hoc basis , they can be trained and retrained.” The governor said.

” Kindly inform the Speaker and the Senate President to advise Mr President to do mass recruitment of up to 100, 000 Men  Into the Nigeria Army , they  should come and recruit the locals whether they have Western Education or not.  ” Governor Zulum told Babajimi Benson , Chairman of the House Committee on Defence .

The governor added ” During the Civil war,  many were recruited  but after some few years, after the Civil war  , they were demobilised . I think this is one of the solutions.  

” There’s need to recruit 50,000 young men from Borno,  we have able bodied young men that can join the Nigeria armed forces on an ad hoc basis , they can be trained and retrained.  

” Apart from this , you can also look for retired Military personnel , Policemen and inject them into the system.” Gov Zulum said .

The Borno Governor also requested the Federal Government to look into the possibility of lifting the ban on the usage of certain types of weapons for the paramilitary in the north east region for  a particular period. 

” I was in Niger Republic last week and I saw their police using Anti Aircraft guns , General Purpose Machine Guns and others. I think the Federal government should consider lifting ban on some kind of weapons in the Northeast for certain period 

” We keep on having series of meetings , endless meetings , without taking decisive steps . I think this crisis will consume all of us ; it will even consume our Democracy, we must take decisive steps .

” you can not fight this insurgency to an end without manpower,  adequate funding and technology ” Governor Zulum said. 

Earlier,  the House of Representatives Committee on Defence had visited the Operation Lafia Dole Theather Command where they  assured  that the House of Representatives will fast track measures to assist the Military at  ending  the Boko Haram insurgency.  

” We have listened to the Theatre Commander and noted the demands, we shall report back to the House of Representatives with a view to meeting the demands of the Military ” Babajimi Benson said .

The Theather Commander,  Major General Olusegun Adeniyi appreciate the members of the committee for their visit and assured that the military will not relent in its efforts at eliminating the Boko haram terrorists.
