Kwara APC Crisis: Why Governor Abdulrazak And Lai Mohammed Are At Loggerheads-Investigation

The crisis in Kwara All Progressives Congress, APC , between the governor, Alhaji Abdulrazak AbdulRahman and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the state chairman of the party, Mr. Bashir Bolarinwa, has to do more on the issue of trust than running a one man show as it’s been alleged against the governor.

Newsnow investigation revealed that the death of Ms Funke Adedoyin, a House of Representatives member on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, really exposed the leaders of the APC in the state.

According to the investigation, it was the governor who singlehandedly sponsored the APC candidate who later defeated the PDP candidate. It was alleged that some of the fund released from the national headquarters of the APC never got to the candidate. Since then the issue of trust has pitted the governor against Alhaji Mohammed. This also came to the fore after the governor was nominated. It was alleged that the Party set up a huge campaign committee with the governor having little input. The governor was said to be enraged when a bill of N2.5billion was presented to him by the leader of the APC in the state for his campaign. The governor, according to the source who craves anonymity turned down the huge bill. From then on, it became a ding dong affairs as Alhaji Lai Mohammed allegedly refused to campaign with the governor except when President Muhammadu Buhari came to Ilorin to present the flag to Governor AbdulRasaq. Again, the Party chairman, Mr. Bolarinwa also did not feature prominently in the electioneering campaign of the governor. He was said to have accompanied the Governor during the campaign to his traditional ruler, the Elese of Igbaja in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara state. He was also in Omu-Aran and in Ilorin when the governor met with the non-indigenes in the state. The Governor was said to be irked by other ridiculous demands from the party chieftains which he considers outrageous. For instance, there was a time the officials of the party in Kwara allegedly asked for N10million to travel to Abuja. The Governor who put his foot down asked them, if they are not contradicting the slogan of ‘OTOGE’ that brought the party to power in the state. He was said to have reminded them that there should be an end to misappropriation and misapplication of state fund which was the order of the day during the Bukola Saraki’s reign as governor and later as a godfather. Governor Abdulrazak, according to the source told them that there won’t be moral justification to continue in what they promised to put a stop at after getting the mandate of the people. He was particularly piqued when the party leader brought a list of those to be appointed commissioners even when they never supported nor believed in his candidacy until after the election has been won and lost. Governor Abdulrazak who was said to have told those close to him that he would cede more seats at least 50 percent of his cabinet to the women since all the elected candidates across the state were 100 percent men, ensured that the decision was followed to the letter. Also, the Governor was said to have been favorably disposed to the demographic that favors younger people of average age of 19.4. All these were done in consultations with the people before his cabinet was unveiled.

As the source put it, “ the idea of saying the governor wants to remove the state chairman is to paint him black as an ingrate. If he had wanted to remove the chairman and dominated the Party in the state, he would have done that without a whimper. Do you know that some other APC governors who sent money to Governor Abdulrazak through a supposedly party leader in Kwara state were angry that he never acknowledged their donations, let alone thank them without knowing that the money never got to him. I think he who comes to the equity must do so with clean hands. We cannot continue with business as usual, unless we want to take the people for granted.”

Going by the events in the party in the last few days, with allegation and counter allegation, it’s obvious that the battle line has been drawn between Governor Abdulrazak and Alhaji Mohammed. While some people, especially the faction loyal to Bolarinwa is supporting the Minister of Information and Culture, the vast majority are said to be gravitating towards the state Governor, obviously because of the Change he represents and his ability to dispense patronage.
