Oshiohmole: His Gaffes, Bravado And Fall

“Now that Oshiohmole has been suspended, Obaseki and his group will be having champagnes that the ubiquitous chairman has been given a bloody nose waiting for the “killer punch while still struggling on the canvas”.

For former governor of Edo state, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, this is not the best of time.

The Abuja High Court has finally put an end to his unnecessary bravado after months of hostility with his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

His fall from Olympian height was predictable because of his many needles crises with fellow governors and other party members.

Long before his sack, Oshiohmole has become an albatross to the APC, losing five strategic states in quick succession and winning two in return.

Apart from his unguarded statement(s), Oshiohmole comes across as someone bereft of leadership quality. As a governor of Edo, he once told a widow, “ I don’t care, go and die”. Just recently after the Supreme Court Judgment, instead of Oshiohmole to meet with the legal department, if he still carries them along on the way forward, he resorted to jankara style. At a press conference he addressed almost immediately, Oshiohmole asserted that nobody will be sworn-in the following day since the APC candidate has been ruled out on account of discrepancies in the certificates of his deputy, Degi-Eremienyo.

Within 48 hours, Oshiohmole addresses media thrice, contradicting self.

Oshiohmole’s leadership style has become a knee jerk approach that most of the people in the APC have raised their voices that he should be relieved of the post, having fallen short of the standard expected of the character for such exalted position. The latest being the former national legal adviser of the party, Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN, who in a long treatise titled, “ Oshiohmole, APC and Bayelsa conundrum’,  advises Oshiohmole to resign honourably for his actions which he says is inimical to the growth of the APC.

Oshiohmole, prior to 2019 general election was involved in crises with several governors of his party,in Zamfara, Imo, Ogun and host of others.

In Zamfara, the situation got so worse that the governor, Abdulaziz Yari, threatens to deal with Oshiohmole ruthlessly if he sends any team to conduct any primary election there.

Even the First Lady, Aisha Buhari condemns Oshiohmole’s style of leadership after the outcome of Adamawa governorship primary election in which Aisha’s  elder brother, Mohammed Modi, who was a candidate failed to secure the APC ticket. Eventually, APC lost the state to intra Party politicking.

In Imo, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Oshiohmole fought dirty. It got so bad that Oshiohmole threw caution to the wind when he was on campaign tour with Senator Hope Uzodinma that he was praying openly during the campaign program that was beamed live for God to dethrone Okorocha, a fellow partyman.

In Ogun, President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC leaders were thoroughly embarrassed. An aggrieved group loyal to Senator Ibikunle Amosun pelted the President and his entourage with sachet waters. Their grievances was about Oshiohmole’s double standard. While he allowed the State Executive Committee to conduct the governorship  primary election in Lagos state, he denied them the same opportunity in Ogun.

Before the crises, the national legal adviser of the party, Mr. Babatunde Ogala, had raised the red flag, accusing Oshiohmole of usurping his position. Ogala in a lengthy memo said Oshiohmole has become the only man running the affairs of the party at the Blantyre Headquarters of the APC, without allowing other NWC members to make input. Ogala was irked that the function of the legal department which he heads has been taken over by the ubiquitous  chairman.

Those who thought Oshiohmole will change his ways were surprised when he started having issues with Governor Godwin Obaseki, his successor, who he singlehandedly imposed.

Now that Oshiohmole has been suspended, Obaseki and his group will be having champagnes that the ubiquitous chairman has been given a bloody nose waiting for the “killer punch while still struggling on the canvas”.

As the countdown to the September 18,2020 governorship election in Edo begins, Obaseki will now heave a sigh of relief that Oshiohmole has been finally dealt with a fatal blow, which he may no longer recover from before the election.

If Oshiohmole was a student of politics, he would have known that his game was up when the chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and his colleagues moved against him. Although, he survived the onslaught, his many battles has been his greatest undoing and the treatment he meted to his predecessor, Chief Odigie Oyegun, will continue to haunt him.

According to the source in the party who craves anonymity, “Oshiohmole’s sack was long overdue but, the party was just waiting for the auspicious time to dump him. If he’s a student of politics, he ought to know that there is an end to his unnecessary grandstanding. His comment after the Bayelsa’s Supreme Court ruling that ‘nobody will be sworn-in was his greatest undoing. It was the last straw that broke the overburdened camels back.

“ The Presidency is fed up with his antics that cost the APC many states hitherto known as its stronghold in the north such as Sokoto, Bauchi and Zamfara. It was therefore, predictable that after the election, his services may no longer be needed. But he was too naive to read the handwriting on the wall.” The source added.

What’s next for Oshiohmole now that Edo, his home state has become a ‘no go area’ for him? What becomes of his fourteen suspended lawmakers that have joined him in the supremacy battle? The days ahead will prove how Oshiohmole will adjust to the reality of his new status as a former chairman of a ruling party who was dethroned for daring to call the bluff of the Governors Forum.
