NMA, TUC Kick Against FG’s Invitation Of Chinese Doctors To Assist In COVID-19

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, have vehemently rejected the invitation of Chinese doctors into the country under the guise of offering assistance.

NMA in a protest letter signed by its National President, Dr. Francis Faduyile, said it’s an embarrassment to the membership of association and other health workers giving their best to contain and prevent the spread of the dreaded coronavirus.

The group said it’s dismayed that the federal government could contemplate inviting the Chinese who are still battling with the virus, adding that the spike in cases and death toll from COVID-19 in Italy coincided with the arrival of the Chinese in the guise of offering assistance.

NMA said the group is blessed with enough doctors who are equal to the task instead of seeking help from a controversial country.

NMA however urged the federal government to pay attention to the issue of lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) , grossly inadequate test kits and test centers across the country, and the absolute lack of any form of insurance for the workforce; which it says  are primordial issues begging for attention at this time.

TUC in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye and Secretary General, Comrade Musa-Lawal Ozigi, said the move wouldn’t be necessary since Nigerian doctors are on top of the challenge.

The statement reads in part, “As an organisation we sincerely appreciate the Chinese authorities for releasing their doctors and some of their best hands despite the catastrophic effect the virus had on the country recently. However, it is important to state here that the minimal number of people infected and deaths is a proof that we are not doing badly in our effort to handle the situation.

“Truly the Chinese authorities have done well by not recording more cases in their country. It is novel and also shows their proactiveness and commitment to crises. That notwithstanding, we insist that we do not need them now; rather we shall continue to adhere to the precautions reeled out by the health professionals to make the job easy.

“In the same vane, there has been a hot debate about the connection between 5G network and coronavirus. Although the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim in a statement has said “no licence has been issued as regards 5G in Nigeria” but at the same time we saw an official letter from a Telco Company notifying Nigerians that they are the first in West Africa to conduct trial on 5G technology.

“That makes it a bit confusing. We would want the Federal Government to set up a Committee of Professionals to research on the development as it will help to address the fears of many Nigerians. We must collectively work to ensure the welfare, health and security of Nigerians are not taken for granted. We must be circumspect NOW.”
