Oshiohmole Has No Power To Grant Ize Iyamu Waiver, It’s The Prerogative Of APC NEC- Investigation

Unless he’s called to order, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiohmole may plunge the party into a serious crisis like what happened in Zamfara and Rivers states last year general election.

Investigation revealed that the national working committee as constituted by Oshiohmole now lacked ‘locus standi’ to take any decision on behalf of the party because it lacked legitimacy.

According to investigation, apart from the national secretary, Mr. Bulama, who was hurriedly sworn-in recently by Oshiohmole, two others have been ruled out by court of competent jurisdiction. This may have invalidated most of the actions taken or will be taken by these officials.

Besides, the system to adopt for governorship primaries is determined by the NEC of the party and not the Oshiohmole led NWC. Again, the waivers purportedly granted to the former Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in 2016 election, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu during the NWC meeting according to the APC Constitution is an exclusive preserve of the NEC of the party. According to Article 31 sub section (2)of the Constitution provides that the NEC will meet to consider waivers application and thereafter if the applicant is qualified, the decision will be passed on to the NWC for implementation. All these were jettisoned by Oshiohmole, even when the deputy chairman, North, Mr. Shuibu stayed away from the meeting that he will never be part of such illegality, it doesn’t bother Oshiohmole.

The former national legal adviser of the party, Dr. Muis Banire, SAN, has counseled the Party times without number on the need for it to follow the constitution of the APC to the letter. He was irked that if APC could no longer obey its own constitution, how will it lay claim to any progressivism.

A chieftain of the party who craved anonymity said the action of Oshiohmole is capable of derailing the party.

“ When the former chairman, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun was leaving, APC has 26 governors, within a year under Oshiohmole it reduced to 20. I think that calls for sober reflection and for the Chairman to review his activities before it’s too late. It was the same high handed ness that led to the loss in Rivers and Zamfara states where the court ruled that we don’t have any candidates at all levels. “Now, Edo is shaking if the Chairman continues to flex muscle with the incumbent governor in order to deny him the second term ticket. How do you justify the call for direct primaries in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic? Is that not a recipe for serious crisis given the fact that the number of cases in Edo state now has continued to rise? Even the former chairman, Chief Oyegun, has counseled that both Obaseki and Ondo state governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, should be given  the tickets to stabilize our party. We need to call Oshiohmole to order before it’s too late.” He said.

Those in the camp of Oshiohmole, however,  said if Governor Godwin Obaseki secures the second term ticket and win, then it’s all over for Oshiohmole, whose political fortunes in Edo has continued to dwindle because of his needless fight with his estranged godson, Obaseki.

Who wins the war? The days ahead will determine if Oshiohmole still calls the shot or will be pushed into political oblivion.
