The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has laid the foundation for the construction of 150 bed-capacity Stroke Centre, which is the largest in the West African region.

The institution also laid the foundations for the extension of both the kidney and radiotherapy centres, which will make them the largest in Nigeria.

Performing the foundation laying ceremony of the triple projects on Thursday in Maiduguri, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, said the decision to construct the projects was taken after the medical needs assessment of the region showed that construction of the centres will tackle growing ailments.

Ahidjo said: “The Centre that we have is one of the most purposeful sourced centre in the whole of the West African sub- region and certainly, it is the largest Stroke Centre with 150 bed-capacity.

” We all know the impact of stroke in our own society especially, on the aged. All the 30 percent admission in the medical wards are for stroke patients.  We all know the importance of prompt treatment in the survival of stroke patients.

” As of now , in the whole of the country, the initial six hours prompt intervention management of Stroke Centres is lacking.  So we decided as Management to come up with intervention that would really assist the whole of the region

Ahidjo, speaking on the extension of the Kidney Centre said all forms of treatment of the urinary system, from the kidney, the uterus, the urinary bladder, the prostate, be it medical or surgical will be undertaken there.

He said: “Basically, if a patient comes with kidney stone, we should be able to remove the stone without surgery. If a patient comes with a renalisis, we should be able to do the same.  And for the Radiotherapy Centre, the extension is for the functionality of the Centre and we need not worry over manpower, as two consultant oncologists are already on ground.”

The CMD revealed that the economic recession has made it difficult to finance projects across the country, but the hospital initiated a lobby group, where it move from ministry to ministry, from NGO to NGO, as well as state government for assistance.

He said: “In general, the funding come from capital projects of the federal government that are appropriated . Some from special intervention, like that from the Borno state government among others.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids.

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said
“You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.”
She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her
ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but
    I had to tell someone! ps4 ps4
