The Eti-Osa Lawyers’ Forum strongly condemn the military action against unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday the 20th of October 2020. We hold the State and Federal Governments responsible for this and urge the Governments to identify the perpetrators for immediate prosecution as well account for the number of victims for adequate compensation. This should not be another case of unknown soldiers.
We think that there are numerous non-lethal ways to dispel a crowd, and resorting to live bullets should only have been done under extreme conditions where the lives of the military men are at stake.
What happened on Tuesday is one of the darkest points since the return of democracy to our dear Nation. It is unacceptable, and an anathema that those charged with protecting the territorial integrity of the country, will turn around to kill unarmed citizens!
Since this has become a national issue beyond the purview of our Forum, we are in contact with the Nigerian Bar Association at all levels and fully support the NBA National on the proposed petition to the International Criminal Court for flagrant infringement of the Human Rights of protesters. We shall continue to collaborate for all other actions necessary.
We also reiterate the need for the state Government to cancel both the Admiralty (Lekki) and Ikoyi Link toll plazas as the toll gates have become symbols and centres of agitations within Eti-Osa community.
