The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, congratulates Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala on her election as the Director General, World Trade Organisation, WTO. We equally appreciate and thank the Federal Government, Nigerians and all the countries that voted in her favour.
TUC in a statement issued by its President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye and Secretary General, Comrade Musa-Lawal Ozigi, said her emergence confirms that Nigerians, nay Africans are great people. “Dr. Okonjo-Iweala needs no introduction, having spent over 25-years of her career at the World Bank as a Development Economist. She rose to become the Managing Director, Operations (2007–2011), afterwhich she served two terms as Finance Minister of Nigeria (2003–2006, 2011–2015).
“As a renowned global finance expert, an economist and international development professional with decades of experience we strongly believe she will bring her experience to bare now that the world economy needs a dynamic transformation.
“The pandemic is still taking its toll on world economy. Almost a million lives were lost; about 25 million people got infected and over half a billion jobs and hundreds of millions of informal economy livelihoods facing uncertainty. This is actually the time we need her experience and expertise. She spearheaded several World Bank initiatives, especially during the global financial crisis. She is not new in crisis management.
“We implore Nigerians and the world at large to give her all necessary support in the areas of initiation and execution of good policies for the betterment of all. The context is over; all hands must be on deck now for a new world in trade relations.” The statement said.
