The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has refuted the claim that the former governor of Lagos state and one of presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu would soon join them as its candidate for 2023 presidential election.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Rufus Ayenugba speaking on a current affairs program, Politics Today, monitored in Lagos on Thursday said SDP is primed to take over power in 2023.
Ayenugba said the poor performance of the ruling APC has made the SDP the party to beat in the days ahead.
Going down the memory lane, Ayenugba maintains that what late Chief MKO Abiola did in 1993 when he won a landslide presidential election on its platform is what the SDP is planning to reenact in 2023.
He, however, explained that though some aspirant may have borrowed that campaign slogan “hope 2023” and went ahead to hire the daughter of the symbol of that party in 1993, and persona connected to that slogan, Nigerians can no longer be deceived.
He said; “Starting from Ekiti state in June, it’s going to be a roller coaster for us. Engr Segun Oni is primed to win the governorship election.
“Already, we have six presidential aspirants who have obtained our nomination forms. That I can confirm to you. But we haven’t received any emissary from Tinubu as it’s being bandied in some quarters. People are talking about the SDP as a viable alternative, so our party is primed to win the next election.”
Ayenugba who would not want to comment on the litigation over the leadership of the Party because it would be subjudice, said, “ As we speak, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, only recognized the leadership of Dr Olu Agunloye, Former Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, and two time minister”.
