A Peep Into My Note At Remo Stars’ Coronation As Nigeria’s New Football Kings

I have to admit, this was my first visit to the Remo Stars Sports Complex and my second visit to Ikenne, which has fast become the new Mecca of Nigerian football. It is customary for me to pen an observatory after every visit to a landmark football location, and this one deserves its place in my notes.

From the moment Chief Wole Oloworemo, the Ekiti State FA Chairman, and I arrived at the gates of the Remo Stars Sports Complex, we could feel a culture of excellence. A system built on continuous improvement, high performance, and success both on and off the pitch. You sense strong leadership, a clear footballing philosophy, and a vision that extends beyond fleeting victories. The club boasts a defined playing style, clear values, and a long-term vision that is rare in Nigerian football. This kind of culture isn’t built overnight, it demands vision, relentless effort, and consistency. As Ekiti FA Chairman remarked, “I think this is just the beginning of something great for this club,” and I couldn’t agree more.

Equally striking is the high-performance environment. No football club in Nigeria presently matches the world-class facilities at the Remo Stars Sports Complex. From top-notch training grounds to recovery facilities, a modern gym, professional team offices, and well-furnished hostels, it’s a setup built for success. I was told discipline, punctuality, and professionalism are non-negotiables here, instilled in every player and official.

There’s a saying, “It takes a man to build a community,” and Kunle Soname has done just that, and more. Through the establishment of Remo Stars Sports Club, he has transformed Ikenne into Nigeria’s football capital. No stadium has hosted more tournaments than this complex in the past four years. I am sincerely happy for Ègbón Kunle that his vision is bearing visible, undeniable fruit.

As for my NPFL Player of the Season 2024/25, that title belongs to Olalekan Adedayo. This young, stocky playmaker is a joy to watch. I’ve followed his progress all season, and he did not disappoint in the coronation game, capping a fine performance with a beautiful goal. What makes Lekan special is his hunger, constantly demanding the ball, driving play, and leading from midfield. His goal against Niger Tornadoes, which clipped the crossbar before marginally crossing the line, was not just any goal; it was the goal that sealed the league title for the Sky Blue Boys. That moment sent the entire stadium into a frenzy. Lekan deserves a place in the CHAN Eagles with these performances. Take your flowers, Lekan.

The coronation match itself was epic. Many expected Remo Stars to take it easy against an Ikorodu City side chasing a CAF slot, but the champions had other ideas. We were treated to a thrilling 4-1 win. I did, however, question Ikorodu City’s tactical exuberance. I expected a more compact, pragmatic approach, perhaps to grind out a draw. Nevertheless, they’ve had a fine season and still have a shot at the FA Cup and a continental ticket.

This experience reminded me that a mega football club is possible in Nigeria. While giants like Al Ahly, Kaizer Chiefs, Zamalek, and Asante Kotoko dominate African football lore, there’s no reason a club like Remo Stars, with sustained effort and strategic planning, cannot join that elite circle.

Special mention must go to the fans, the true kings and queens of the game. The halftime entertainment was top-notch, capped by a raffle draw where two 55-inch televisions and 10 exotic mobile phones were gifted to lucky supporters. Every club should aspire to reward their fans like this during their final home games.

Another aspect that stood out was the compact design of the stadium. Wherever you sat in the Remo Sports Complex, you had an unobstructed, immersive view of the action. The cleverly elevated stands enhanced the viewing experience. As a fan of compact stadiums, this one ticked most of the boxes, although it still lacks the premium hospitality vibe, even in the VIP section.

You can also witness the power of leveraging partnerships and brands at this stadium. If you want to get a glimpse into Soname’s business empire, just take a walk along the main bowl. I lost count of the number of brands flashing across the electronic pitchside advertisement boards. Everything about it was deliberate, strategic, and impactful. Remo Stars might well be the most branded club in Nigerian football history.

Lastly, a word of appreciation. Although I forgot to request a Remo Stars replica jersey from Ègbón Kunle, I must thank him and his gracious wife for the excellent reception after the coronation. The Ofada rice meal was rich and satisfying, perfectly complemented by a glass of fine red wine.

A memorable visit indeed.
