Obasa Hails First Lady’s Visit, Backs Leadership Initiative For Girl-Child

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has commended the recent visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing it as a meaningful reaffirmation of her enduring ties to Lagos and her commitment to national development.

Obasa made the remarks during an engagement session the First Lady held with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and political stakeholders in the state.

He said the visit served as both a symbolic and practical gesture, reinforcing Senator Tinubu’s dedication to the welfare of Lagosians.

“It’s very good to have her back in Lagos. She has always been our mother — first as the First Lady of Lagos State, and now as the First Lady of the Federation,” Obasa said.

“Her well-organised and impactful visit sends a clear message that her bond with Lagos remains strong and that she is deeply invested in the state’s progress.”

The Speaker lauded Senator Tinubu’s developmental agenda, particularly her focus on food security, poverty alleviation, and her strategic engagement with traditional institutions, saying these efforts resonate with both constitutional responsibilities and grassroots needs.

Obasa also used the occasion to highlight Lagos State’s ongoing legislative efforts to protect the rights of children, especially the girl-child, referencing existing laws on rape, abuse, and school safety.

However, he noted that a particularly promising idea emerged during the First Lady’s visit — the establishment of a focused institution dedicated to grooming young girls for leadership roles.

“One key issue raised was leadership training for the girl-child. I agree completely,” he said. “Beyond legislation, we must actively nurture leadership consciousness among our girls. It’s an initiative we are taking seriously, and we will explore how best to integrate it into our developmental framework.”

Obasa’s endorsement of the proposal adds momentum to the broader national conversation on empowering the next generation of female leaders in Nigeria.
