Afenifere To FG: Increase The 800,000 Tax Exemption Threshold To N3.6m …Urges S’West Governors To Equip Amotekun Corps, Have Rail Line Project

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere has urged the Federal government to raised the tax exemption from 800, 000 threshold to N3.6m to enable more low income earners to benefit.

Rising from the meeting held at the Akure home of its nonagarian leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere also urged the south West governors to equip the Amotekun Corps to be able to function effectively.

The group in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, however commended the federal government for the road rehabilitation in the south west region.

On economic integration, Afenifere urged the south West governors to come up with the rail line project that would link up together at each state capital.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF AFENIFERE HELD IN THE AKURE HOME OF THE NATIONAL LEADER, CHIEF REUBEN FAMUYIDE FASORANTI, OFR, CFR, ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2026

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, held its Caucus meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026 at the Akure residence of the National Leader, Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, OFR, CFR. General Meeting held the following day, Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the same place.

The Leader welcomed members to the meeting. He prayed that the new year 2026 and beyond will be of blessings to everyone in all ramifications. Thereafter, he asked HRM, Oba Olu Falae, to conduct the meeting. Oba Falae did but had to leave later because of the insecurity issue that occurred within his kingdom in Ilu-Abo.

Basorun Seinde Arogbofa was asked to take over the conduct of the Caucus meeting as well as the General Meeting that took place on Tuesday.

Participants came from Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Lagos and Ondo States.Some of the personalties at the meeting included Chief Femi Aluko, Honourable Korede Duyile, Agbaakin Ademola Folarin, Abagun Kole Omololu, Honourable Lekan Alabi, Chief Deji Wellington, Dr. Niyi Osoba, High Chief Ayo Abereoran, Chief (Mrs) Grace Animola, Right Honourable Bakita Bello, Ambassador Samson Obanibi, Engr. Lai Gboluaje, Alhaji Abdullah Kasali and Chief Kehinde Oladeinde among others.

The meeting discussed issues pertaining to the organization, to Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole. Social and economic issues were discussed extensively with particular reference to what governments at all levels can do to better the lot of the people. But more attention was paid to the issue of insecurity that has now taken a very disturbing dimension in various parts of the country.

Afenifere is very concerned that banditry and kidnapping are now so rampart that they are occurring in the South West almost on a daily basis. The meeting considered this as unacceptable and called on governments, security agencies and community leaders to rise up to the challenges and find lasting solutions to the menace.

The meeting symapthised with Oluabo of Ilu Abo, HRM, Oba Olu Falae, the people of Ilu-Abo and Ondo state government on the terror act that took place on Sunday night. Expressing serious concerns over acts of terrorism occurring in various parts of Yorubaland, participants called for urgent actions to put a stop to the unfortunate incidents.

The meeting also deliberated on the new Tax regimes that reportedly took off from this year January.After deliberations on these issues, the meeting resolved as follows:

1. As the saying goes, it’s when one is alive and in good health that one can think of becoming anything. As such, the situation of insecurity in our land leaves a lot to be desired. Afenifere has repeatedly been calling attention to this menace. We were not just calling attention to the menace, we always provide ideas on the way out. In this wise, we call on State Governors in the Southwest to empower the security outfit Amotekun. We also appeal to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the state governments to expedite action on the much vaunted State Police.

2. Afenifere called on governors of Southwest to do more in strengthening Amotekun with a view to curtailing insecurity in the region.

3. The body also called on these governors to come up with a rail line project that will link the capitals of Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti States. The rail-line and effective security cauldron can be extended to Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta States as well in alighment with governments of those states.

4. Afenifere deliberated on the contents of the Tax Laws as announced by the federal government. Note was taken that the intention of the government with the tax laws is to, among others, relieve low-income earners of financial burdens. But the way it is presently structured, low-income earners are likely to be at the receiving end. In this regard, we are pleading that the threshold of N800,000 be raised generously upward (to say N3.6 million) so as to enable more low-income earners to benefit.

5. Afenifere commended the federal government on the construction and reconstruction of roads in various parts of the country. It went further to appeal to the government to prevail on the contractors handling these projects to expedite action in terms of quality as well as duration for the completion of the projects.

Specifically, we appeal to the government to motivate respective contractors to quickly complete works on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan-Ilorin-Mokwa Road, Abeokuta-Abeokuta Road, Ibadan-Ijebu-ode Road, Ibadan-Iwo-Osogbo-Ikirun-Offa-Ilorin Road as well as Akure-Oore-Okitipupa-Igbokoda-Akinfosile-Igbotako Road.

Afenifere appreciated the federal government on the reconstruction of Ibadan-Ife-Akure Road that has commenced. It expressed the hope that the work will be completed very soon.

6. The organisation commiserated with Onabanjo family and Ogun State people generally on the passing away of the wife of the first civilian governor of the state, Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo. The husband, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, was a commited Awoist and a chieftain of Afenifere.

7. Finally, the meeting commended the Leader for steadfastly directing the affairs of Afenifere.
