Jihadists Overun Military Base, Kill Brig Gen, 18 Soldiers In Borno- AFP Report
Jihardists believed to be members of Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, has killed a Brigadier General O O Braimah and at least 18 soldiers in a violent attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno state, according to AFP.
The attackers, which according to sources came in large numbers, overran the base, setting vehicles and buildings on fire before withdrawing.
The location of the attack is A 29 Task Force Brigade base in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, located about 75 km from Maiduguri.
The Nigerian military confirmed a coordinated terrorist attack and that “a few” soldiers lost their lives, though they did not immediately release the full casualty figures, stating the attack was repelled, notes the BBC.
This marks the second death of a senior Nigerian military officer in five months, following the death of Brigadier General Musa Uba in November, according to AFP reports.
Local sources confirmed that the base was heavily damaged during the assault.
