Sustainable Funding: University Leaders Set To Meet In Abuja

Senior university leaders, policymakers, and education stakeholders from across the Commonwealth are set to converge in Abuja for a high-level conference aimed at addressing one of the most pressing challenges in higher education—sustainable funding and revenue generation.

The event tagged Commonwealth Institute Universities Leaders Conference, will take place on 23–24 April 2026 in Nigeria’s capital city.

The two-day event is expected to bring together vice-chancellors, founders, registrars, bursars, governing council members, and development officers, alongside policymakers, financial experts, and higher education strategists.

At a time when universities across Africa and the wider Commonwealth are facing rising operational costs, increased regulatory demands, and intensified competition for students, the conference will focus on practical solutions rather than theoretical discussions.

Organisers say the event is designed to equip participants with actionable strategies for building financially sustainable institutions, diversifying revenue streams, and strengthening institutional governance.

The central theme of the conference—Funding and Revenue Generation for Universities—reflects growing concern about the financial viability of higher education institutions operating without consistent access to public funding.

Key sessions will explore:

• Access to funding frameworks and engagement with intervention agencies

• Strategies for developing alternative income streams beyond tuition

• Attracting investors, donors, and development partners

• Strengthening governance and institutional credibility.

Participants will also examine how universities can leverage research commercialisation, executive education, consultancy services, and alumni engagement to improve financial resilience.

The conference will feature an array of prominent speakers and experts, including leaders from finance, policy, and academia. Among those expected to speak are investment experts, legal specialists, and university leaders.

Speakers confirmed include Sonny Echono Executive Secretary of TETFund, Lawrence Ezemonye, Chairman, Committee of Vice-Chancellors, Wale Adeosun, CEO, Kuramo Capital, Ummahani Ahmad Amin, Capital Market Solicitor and Expert of Interest-free finance, Yemi Keri, Funding, Investment, and Innovation Expert, alongside Blackson Bayewumi, Country Director, Commonwealth Society, Sola Longe-Okenimkpe, Fintech Expert, Marketing Communications Specialist and Commonwealth Scholar the event will be moderated by Anthony Kila Commonweath Institute Director.

The gathering is structured to encourage direct engagement, enabling participants to interact with decision-makers, regulators, and funding experts in a collaborative setting.

A major highlight of the event will be the unveiling of the Commonwealth Collegium, a proposed alliance of universities aimed at fostering collaboration in research, funding, and academic exchange across Commonwealth countries.

Confirming the landmark event, Prof Anthony Kila noted that “the initiative reflects a growing recognition that universities must increasingly work together across borders to remain competitive and relevant in a rapidly evolving global education landscape”.

Prof Yakubu Ochefu, a Professor of Economic History & Development Studies and National Chairman, Association of Nigerian Universities Alumni who will also be speaking at the event noted that “the conference comes at a critical moment for higher education, particularly in emerging economies where institutions must balance expansion with sustainability”.
