The Polytechnic Ibadan: Students Urge Oyo Assembly To Reject School Renaming After Olunloyo

The Students’ Union Government of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has called on the Oyo State House of Assembly to reconsider the Governor’s recent pronouncement to rename the institution.

In an official press release dated June 30, 2025, the union expressed deep concern over the possible erasure of the school’s legacy, identity, and academic reputation if the name is changed.

With over 50 years of history, the students argued that The Polytechnic, Ibadan, is not just a name but a symbol of excellence that has impacted thousands of students, alumni, and stakeholders across Nigeria.

They emphasized that renaming the institution could damage its heritage, affect alumni pride, and distort its institutional identity.

The union urged the House of Assembly to act swiftly, citing the preservation of history, the protection of institutional integrity, and the safeguarding of the school’s academic reputation as vital reasons for their appeal.

“We humbly request your intervention in this matter,” the statement concluded, calling for the school’s name to be retained as The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
