2027: Jonathan Visits IBB In Minna
Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Sunday paid a visit to ex-Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Rtd), popularly known as IBB, sparking fresh political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, which took place at Babangida’s Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, reportedly lasted over 45 minutes and was held behind closed doors.
According to Leadership, Jonathan arrived at the residence around 4:15 p.m. and departed shortly after 5:00 p.m. He traveled by road for the visit.
While the details of their discussion have not been officially disclosed, sources familiar with the development say the meeting had political undertones, particularly centered on ongoing permutations and alignments leading up to the 2027 elections.
Efforts to get a reaction from Jonathan’s media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, proved abortive, as phone calls and text messages were unanswered as of the time of reporting.
The visit comes amid growing calls, especially from Northern political stakeholders, urging Jonathan to consider contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, had earlier revealed that he would step down his own presidential ambition if the former president decides to run.
Governor Mohammed had said, “As long as Jonathan is interested in the presidency, I will not present myself. I have always maintained that he is a capable leader and my political mentor.”
However, this potential comeback appears uncertain, as Jonathan’s wife, Patience Jonathan, publicly dismissed the idea back in May.
She stated that her family would not support any campaign against incumbent President Bola Tinubu and would instead back his re-election bid.
With this recent meeting, speculation is once again building around Jonathan’s future political ambitions as the nation inches closer to the 2027 polls.
