Obasanjo Library Condemns EFCC ‘Invasion’, Threatens Legal Action

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Ogun State has accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of violently invading its premises in the early hours of Saturday, causing panic and injuries.

The EFCC had earlier confirmed that it conducted a raid on a hotel in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, arresting 93 suspected internet fraudsters.

However, the OOPL insists that the commission’s operatives unlawfully entered the library grounds, claiming to act on an intelligence tip and insisting the police had been informed about the operation.

Contradicting the EFCC’s claims, the library management said both the police officers stationed at the library gate and additional personnel from Kemta Police Station—who had been invited by the event organisers—denied any prior knowledge of the raid.

The EFCC operatives also reportedly failed to present any search or arrest warrants during the incursion.

According to the library, the operation, led by an individual identified as “Olapade,” involved over 50 armed men who fired shots and threatened attendees, sparking chaos and terrorising residents on the premises.

Several people were reportedly injured as guests fled in panic.

The management described the incident as “a clear case of invasion of private property” and a violation of the rights of the library and its guests.

They emphasised that the event taking place was a private, publicly advertised function.

OOPL has launched an investigation into the raid and announced plans to escalate the matter to top authorities, including the EFCC, the police, and the Department of State Security.

The management is demanding an official explanation and a public apology from the EFCC for what it terms “gangster-like” behavior and the resultant harm caused.

They warned that failure to do so would compel them to seek legal redress and sanctions.

The statement said, “This morning, at about 2 am, the OOPL premises were invaded by a Gestapo-like gang of over 50 armed men, shooting guns, threatening to kill people, and purporting to be from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“The invasion, led by one ‘Olapade’ caused serious panic and chaos, leading to serious injuries among participants trying to escape the shooting and near carnage that resulted, and causing terror among residents on the site.

“It should be noted that the event was a private event that had been widely advertised to members of the public for days prior.

“Management has commenced its investigations of the invasion and will take up the matter with the highest authorities, including the EFCC, the police, and the Department of State Security.”

“In the meantime, management demands an explanation of these impudent actions from the Commission and an apology from the EFCC authorities for the infringement of its rights, to all those who gathered, and those who sustained serious injuries from the gangster like induced chaos. Failure for which the management will be compelled to seek redress and sanctions as appropriate,” it added.
