JKF At 61: Why I Do Not Wish You Success

My dear Egbon, Dr. Kayode Fayemi,

Happy birthday to an enigma.

Happy birthday to a seasoned scholar.

Happy birthday to an astute and highly intelligent historian.

Happy birthday to my egbon — oko erelu, bam bam.

Today, as many join in celebrating you, I also raise my voice in honour of a life that has become a reference point for excellence, intellect, and service. However, I choose to differ in my prayers for you.

While many will wish you greater success, I do not—because you are already successful in all aspects of life. Your achievements speak loudly; your legacy is visible; your impact is undeniable. From scholarship to statesmanship, from leadership to character, you have walked the path of purpose with grace and distinction.

Therefore, the only thing I sincerely wish for you is long life and sound health, so that you may continue to enjoy the fruits of your labour and witness the enduring value of the seeds you have sown.

Congratulations, sir, on this remarkable milestone.

Sixty-one years of a life well lived is worthy of celebration.
