Aheead of May’s Unity Cup tournament taking place in London, Nigeria football fans and aficionados have urged Super Eagles’ coach Eric Chelle, to extend invitations to some outstanding players in the Nigeria top tier football league, the NPFL.
Many watchers and lovers of the Nigerian football league have identified a few players who they think deserves a call-up to the Super Eagles.
Foremost sports activist and national coordinator of Friends Of Nigeria Sports (FNS), Chief Diprieye Thompson noted that players like Joseph Arumala of Ikorodu City, who is the leading scorer of the NPFL with 12 goals so far, deserves a chance in the team.
Thompson argued that since Eric Chelle is in the process of rebuilding a team for future competitve games, he should be bold and give home players the opportunities to prove themselves.
“What’s the essence of having a football league in Nigeria, if the players can’t aspire to play for the Super Eagles except they travel out to play in whatever foreign leagues,” Thompson asked rhetorically.
“Joseph Arumala, like a few others, have been very impressive so far in this year’s NPFL. It’s not a child’s play to score 12 goals in a very tough and competitive football league like the NPFL.
“Are our football administrators, particularly, the technical department, too weak to mandate Chelle to ensure we’ve at least three or four players from the NPFL in the team,” the fiery sports activist demanded.
