MCE Mourns Labour Leader Ugboaja, Media Chief Oladipo; Demands Electoral Integrity Ahead Of 2027
LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE), a coalition of prominent Nigerian civil society leaders, has expressed deep grief over the passing of Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Mr. Dotun Oladipo, Managing Director of Premium Eagle Media Limited.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, by the Head of the MCE National Secretariat, Olawale Okunniyi, the group described the deaths as a monumental loss to both the labor movement and the independent media landscape.
The statement, co-signed by high-profile national figures including Dr. Usman Bugaje, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, Prof. Pat Utomi, Amb. Nkoyo Toyo, and Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, extended heartfelt condolences to the families and colleagues of both men.
Legacies of Service and Advocacy
The MCE highlighted the parallel legacies of Ugboaja and Oladipo, noting that while they operated in different professional spheres, they shared a unified vision for a democratic Nigeria.
Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja: Recognized for his fierce labor advocacy and his pivotal role between 2006 and 2009 as the Coordinator for Advocacy and Mobilization at the Alliance for Credible Elections (ACE), where he fought to strengthen citizen participation.
Mr. Dotun Oladipo: Honored as a trailblazing media executive and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), celebrated for his dedication to public-interest journalism, independent media growth, and holding those in power accountable.
A Rallying Cry for the 2027 Elections
With Nigeria facing critical structural hurdles ahead of the fast-approaching 2027 general elections, the MCE warned that the sacrifices made by both departed leaders must not be rendered meaningless by voter apathy, institutional manipulation, or political exclusion.”The struggle for credible elections must continue,” the statement urged.
“The MCE calls on Nigerians to honor the memories of Dotun Oladipo and Emmanuel Ugboaja by refusing to surrender the democratic space to those who seek to undermine the people’s right to freely choose their leaders.”
The coalition concluded with a stern charge to the Nigerian press to remain courageous in its watchdog role, and for citizens to remain active participants rather than spectators in the nation’s democratic evolution.
