Dabiri-Erewa Pays Condolence Visit To Families Of Slain Nigerians In Canada, Commends Life Sentence For Killer
Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) commends the conviction and sentencing of the individual found guilty in the tragic killing of two young Nigerians, Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, who lost their lives in a nightclub shooting in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, on July 23, 2022.
The Ontario Court of Justice sentenced the offender to life imprisonment, with no eligibility for parole for 25 years, following his conviction on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm.
The Commission in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun noted that while no judicial outcome can restore the lives of the deceased or erase the pain endured by their families, the sentencing represents a significant step toward accountability and justice for the victims and their loved ones.
Chibueze Momah, aged 22 at the time of his death, was a promising young Nigerian who had recently graduated with a diploma in Computer Programming and aspired to build a successful career in the technology sector.
He was the only son of Mr. Ikechukwu Momah and a cherished member of a family of five. He had reportedly hoped to support and reunite with members of his family in Canada in the future.
His fellow victim, Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, also lost his life while carrying out his duties as a security personnel. Both young men were described by family, friends, and colleagues as hardworking, ambitious, and committed to building better futures for themselves and their loved ones.
Following the tragic incident in 2022, Hon. (Dr.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM ) paid a condolence visits to the bereaved families and expressed the Commission’s solidarity with them during their period of grief.
She offered heartfelt condolences and prayed for the strength and fortitude needed to bear the irreparable loss.
NiDCOM commends the efforts of the law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities involved in the investigation, extradition, prosecution, and eventual conviction of the offender.
The Commission also appreciates the resilience and patience demonstrated by the families throughout the legal process.
As the families continue to mourn their loved ones, NiDCOM reiterates its commitment to the welfare, protection, and support of Nigerians in the diaspora and remains steadfast in advocating for justice whenever Nigerian citizens are victims of crimes abroad.
The Commission extends its continued condolences to the Momah and Amos-Arowoshegbe families and prays for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
