CRISIS AT THE GATES: Open Letter Alarms Tinubu Over ‘Initiation Into Suffering’ At NYSC Camps
ABUJA, NIGERIA— In a searing, emotional appeal that exposes deep fractures in Nigeria’s premier youth institution, public affairs analyst and veteran journalist Lanre Ogundipe has issued an urgent SOS to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps have degenerated into sites of human suffering and national humiliation.
The open letter, addressed to President Tinubu and the NYSC Director General, paints a grim picture of the ongoing Batch B Stream II Orientation Exercise, detailing how the nation’s brightest young graduates are being broken down by systemic neglect the moment they step through the camp gates.
A Handshake of Hardship
Ogundipe, a former President of both the Nigerian and Africa Union of Journalists, argues that national service was never meant to be a punishment. Instead of a proud welcome into citizenship, arriving corps members—many of whom travel up to 20 hours through dangerous roads—are met with an administrative nightmare.
“What message are we conveying if that first encounter is characterised by endless queues, prolonged waiting, overcrowding, exposure to rain or scorching sun, uncertainty, hunger, exhaustion, and anxiety?” Ogundipe questions, calling the current system a moral failure.
The letter highlights a dangerous disregard for the invisible burdens carried by the youth, pointing out that graduates living with asthma, diabetes, sickle cell disease, and hypertension are forced to stand for hours in suffocating lines without shelter or food, risking preventable tragedy.

While acknowledging that the NYSC has spent over five decades fostering national unity, Ogundipe emphasizes that the institution is buckling under the weight of modern realities. Nigeria’s graduate population has exploded since 1973, transport networks have deteriorated, and security threats have altered travel patterns, yet camp operations remain stubbornly outdated.
“No nation should invite its young graduates to national service and allow their first lesson in citizenship to be that suffering is the price of serving their fatherland,” the statement reads.
A Call for Immediate Presidential Intervention
The humanitarian appeal demands that the Federal Government immediately step in to restore dignity to the scheme. Ogundipe is calling for emergency measures across all camps, including:
Humanitarian Reception: Erecting covered waiting bays and providing clean drinking water and refreshments to waiting corps members.
Rapid Medical Screening: Deploying medical teams to proactively identify and rescue vulnerable or ill graduates from the queues.
Digital Revolution: Completely restructuring the registration process using modern technology to eliminate physical bottlenecks.
The letter concludes with a haunting reminder to the administration: history will judge the government not by the concrete bridges it builds, but by how it treats the young citizens who hold the future of the nation in their hands.
