In a pivotal strategy session at the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission headquarters in Abuja, Violet Nwosu in a statement said the NiDCOM Chairperson Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, alongside Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Yakubu N. Gambo, and Consul General in Jeddah, Ambassador Muazam I.J. Nayaya, unveiled a sweeping plan to overhaul diaspora engagement.
Behind the scenes, Nigerian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia are battling a relentless consular emergency as officers work around the clock issuing dozens of Emergency Travel Certificates daily to citizens trapped in detention centers.
A significant bottleneck has emerged where numerous Nigerians remain stuck in foreign cells, unable to return home even after serving their full prison sentences due to outstanding financial fines.
Despite these grim challenges, officials fiercely rejected the negative stereotypes trailing the diaspora community, with Ambassador Gambo emphasizing that Saudi Arabia is home to a massive, highly successful population of Nigerian doctors, engineers, educators, artisans, and traders.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that the public usually only hears about the bad cases, declaring that now is the time to start celebrating the long-established families and professionals excelling in the Kingdom.
To combat these ongoing crises and streamline emergency responses, Nigerian authorities are enforcing a strict new directive requiring all fragmented Nigerian groups in Saudi Arabia to organize under a single, unified umbrella body for collective bargaining and swift diplomatic intervention.
Furthermore, the NiDCOM boss called on all citizens to immediately register on the Commission’s Diaspora Data Mapping Portal to secure accurate statistics for robust national planning, reaffirming a joint commitment to protecting citizen welfare under Nigeria’s “Four Ds” foreign policy framework.
