2027 And Beyond: Sanwo-Olu Champions $1Trillion Economic Vision, Electoral Integrity At Freedom Online Lecture
LAGOS, NIGERIA — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rallied national leaders behind a bold vision for Nigeria’s future, reinforcing the country’s trajectory toward a $1 trillion economy by 2030 while making a powerful case for absolute integrity in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the 7th Annual Freedom Online Lecture held in Lagos today, Governor Sanwo-Olu served as the anchor of optimism amidst a heavyweight gathering of political, media, and traditional leaders debating the theme: “2027 Elections: Economy, Security And Nigeria’s Future.”

A Brighter Economic Horizon
Dismissing economic skeptics, Governor Sanwo-Olu painted a bullish picture of Nigeria’s economic future, firmly backing the macro-economic destination set by President Bola Tinubu.
“The President has set the destination: a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2030,” Sanwo-Olu declared. “I know there are people who scoff at that number. People also scoffed at a reserve of fifty billion dollars, and at a billion dollars a month in remittances, and at the stock market worth more than 150 trillion Naira.”
Demonstrating his administration’s alignment with this growth trajectory through tangible infrastructure delivery, the Governor drew loud applause by announcing that the critical Odo Iya Alaro Bridge will be opened before the end of September. He added that expansion of the strategic Blue Line rail system remains firmly on track to boost commerce in Nigeria’s economic hub.
Process Over Power: The 2027 Mandate
With the political landscape gradually shifting focus toward the next general elections, Governor Sanwo-Olu delivered a statesperson-like reminder to the political class regarding the sanctity of human life and democratic institutions.
“A mandate is only as strong as the process that produced it,” Sanwo-Olu stated emphatically. “No office in this land is worth the life of a single Nigerian, and no victory won by the wrong means is a victory at all.”
His position on institutional strength found strong echoes across the panel. Former Minister of Information and Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, noted that the 2027 transition must not be viewed merely as a contest for power, but as a mechanism for nation-building and economic recovery. Hon. Ladi Adebutu, PDP Governorship candidate for Ogun State, similarly conceded that for Nigeria’s capitalistic economy to thrive, state institutions must be aggressively strengthened.
The Inseparable Pillars: Security and Economy
The lecture, hosted by Gabriel Akinadewo, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Freedom Online, heavily spotlighted structural reforms needed to secure the economic gains highlighted by Governor Sanwo-Olu. Akinadewo argued that 28 years of unbroken democracy mean Nigeria must abandon “archaic 1960s systems” and fully activate state policing by 2027.
Former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, backed this stance, noting that security and a strong economy are entirely intertwined. While Daniel advocated for urgent economic diversification away from oil, he praised Lagos State—and by extension, Ogun State—for successfully creating the enabling environments required for businesses to thrive despite nationwide challenges.
Addressing local security structures, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, appealed directly to Governor Sanwo-Olu to approve his localized security proposal, asserting that a decentralized, state-led police force would yield measurable safety results within six months. Former presidential spokesman Mr. Femi Adesina harmonized the panel’s sentiments, noting that navigating the slippery slope toward a robust future is impossible without the foundation of safety and fiscal soundness currently being championed in Lagos.
A Charge to the Press
As the custodian of the event, Lai Mohammed charged the media to remain the ultimate “custodians of truth” as the nation navigates this critical economic and political transition.
With Governor Sanwo-Olu pointing toward concrete indicators of resilience—from soaring stock market capitalizations to rapid-response infrastructure timelines—the 7th Freedom Online Lecture concluded with a resonant consensus: Nigeria’s capacity is far greater than its problems, and the decisions being executed today in hubs like Lagos will define the promise of 2027 and beyond.
