The British High Commission in Nigeria has commended Lloyd’s Register for its continued support for the development of future Nigerian leaders through its partnership with the UK Government’s Chevening Scholarship Programme.

The partnership provides outstanding Nigerian professionals pursuing maritime-related studies with opportunities to undertake fully funded one-year master’s degree programmes at leading universities in the United Kingdom.

Lloyd’s Register, a global provider of engineering, technology and professional services for the maritime sector, is one of Chevening’s global partners and sponsors scholarships for candidates from Nigeria and other African countries whose proposed studies align with the maritime industry.

Speaking on the partnership, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, said the initiative would help develop professionals capable of driving innovation, sustainability and growth in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Lloyd’s Register to support outstanding Nigerians with the potential to lead and drive positive change in the maritime sector.

“Together, we are investing in future leaders who will strengthen innovation, sustainability, and growth across the industry,” he said.

Baxter said Nigeria’s maritime industry remained important to the country’s trade and economic development, adding that the scholarship partnership would equip emerging leaders with the skills and professional networks required to contribute to the sector’s future.

“Nigeria’s maritime sector is vital to trade and economic development, and this partnership helps equip emerging leaders with the skills and networks needed to shape its future,” he said.

He added that the British High Commission looked forward to continuing its collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and celebrating the achievements of Chevening Scholars as they contribute to Nigeria and beyond.

Also speaking, Lloyd’s Register’s Business Director for Africa, Goz Gwam, said the organisation was proud of its partnership with Chevening, describing it as an avenue to connect with talented individuals whose aspirations support key areas of national development.

“We are proud of our partnership with Chevening, which helps us connect with talented individuals whose aspirations support key areas of national development,” Gwam said.

According to him, the partnership was focused on developing the next generation of maritime leaders who would contribute to the growth of Nigeria and Africa while strengthening relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, including Lloyd’s Register.

The programme supports one-year taught master’s degrees at UK universities for individuals with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers.

Established in 1983, Chevening has grown into an international scholarship scheme with scholars from more than 140 countries and territories.

The programme has produced more than 60,000 alumni worldwide, constituting a global network of professionals across different sectors.

Lloyd’s Register, which dates back to 1760, specialises in marine classification, compliance and engineering advisory services for the maritime and energy industries.

Its support for the Chevening programme is aimed at fostering a new generation of professionals committed to maritime safety, engineering excellence and sustainability.

The partnership, the organisations said, would continue to provide opportunities for talented professionals to acquire advanced skills and international networks that could contribute to the future development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
