APC Denies Assassination Plot Against Atiku, Urges Security Agencies To Investigate Allegations
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has strongly denied allegations of a government-backed plot to assassinate former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
The denial follows a public statement by Timi Frank, a member of the ADC, who claimed the Nigerian government was planning to assassinate the opposition candidate.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the APC Campaign Council Spokesperson, Dele Alake, described the claims as “wild” and “baseless,” labeling them as typical opposition rabble-rousing aimed at heating up the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We categorically reject the claim that the presidency of Nigeria or the APC Campaign Council is involved in any plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any opposition figure,” Alake stated.
The council urged national security agencies to immediately invite Mr. Frank to substantiate his grave allegations.
Alake emphasized that any credible threat to life must be treated with urgency, regardless of political affiliations, and called on Frank to provide any available evidence to investigators.
Addressing claims that Atiku’s security detail had been withdrawn, the APC campaign stated that the former Vice President remains well-protected by both the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu recently directed security agencies to increase protection for all presidential, vice-presidential, governorship, and deputy governorship candidates nationwide.
The council further advised politicians and their supporters to remain factual and responsible in their public utterances as the campaign season intensifies, urging them to focus on issues that matter to Nigerians rather than character assassination.
