Aiyedatiwa Orders River Fumigation, Clean Water Supply At Igbokoda Crash Site

IGBOKODA — The Ondo State Government has ordered the immediate fumigation of the Igbokoda river and the distribution of emergency health kits to residents following growing fears of a public health crisis at the site of last week’s military plane crash.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa issued the directive to the state’s Ministries of Environment and Health after local community members raised alarms over a severe, suffocating stench emanating from the waters where the Nigerian Air Force aircraft went down.

The river serves as the primary source of water and livelihood for Igbokoda and several neighbouring riverine communities, triggering urgent government intervention to block a potential outbreak of waterborne diseases.

“The directive is aimed at preventing a possible outbreak of diseases,” said Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, in an official statement on Wednesday. As part of the emergency safety protocols, the state government is distributing nose masks and essential medical kits to protect families from inhaling toxic fumes at the crash site.

Furthermore, Governor Aiyedatiwa has instructed the leadership of the Ilaje Local Government to mobilize a fleet of water tankers to deliver clean, potable drinking water to the affected population. This emergency water supply will remain active if ongoing laboratory tests confirm the river has been severely contaminated by aviation fuel or debris.

The governor emphasized that these interim relief measures will stay in place until a permanent environmental cleanup is completed, adding that the state remains fully committed to supporting the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing evacuation and salvage operations while prioritizing community safety.
