Ondo Govt Orders Fumigation Of Igbokoda River, Distributes Health Kits After Air Force Crash
IGBOKODA — Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has ordered the immediate fumigation of the Igbokoda River and the distribution of health kits to local residents following environmental concerns caused by last week’s Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash.
The directive follows urgent complaints from community members regarding a strong, suffocating stench emanating from the river where the military aircraft went down.
The Igbokoda River serves as a vital economic lifeline and a primary source of water for both Igbokoda and its neighbouring coastal communities.
To prevent a potential outbreak of water-borne diseases, Governor Aiyedatiwa has instructed the state Ministries of Environment and Health to deploy teams for an extensive decontamination and fumigation exercise.
Recognizing the immediate threat to the local water supply, the Governor also directed the Ilaje Local Government to mobilize water tankers to supply clean, potable drinking water to residents if ongoing assessments prove the river is too polluted for safe consumption.
This emergency water supply will remain active until long-term remediation is completed.
Furthermore, residents will receive nose masks and essential health kits to shield them from toxic fumes and potential respiratory hazards.
In an official statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the state government reiterated its full support for the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing evacuation and recovery operations, while emphasizing that the safety, health, and welfare of the affected citizens remain the administration’s topmost priority.
