FG Declares Thursday Public Holiday To Mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a nationwide public holiday to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. In his statement, signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister extended his congratulations to all Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo praised the resilience, warmth, and rich human capital of the Nigerian people, describing the nation as a beacon of hope and African pride. He noted that these strengths align directly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
Emphasizing that peace and stability are fundamental prerequisites for national development, the Minister urged citizens to emulate the patriotism of Nigeria’s founding fathers.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated. “Our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built.”
The Minister reassured the public that the current administration is fully committed to upgrading national security, enhancing public safety, and fostering an environment where citizens can thrive securely. He called on all Nigerians to use the holiday as a time to reflect on the core values of unity, patriotism, and peaceful co-existence.
