Odyssey Of Aiyedatiwa’s Infrastructural Development
By Idowu Ajanaku
“Mr. Governor has deliberately provided an ambience that opened up the industrial and economic frontiers of development, strategically placing Ondo State on the world map,”-Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti ( Secretary to the State Government )
The description of the massive infrastructural and social development initiatives of Ondo state by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwaas “lifelines”, designed to reconnect communities and, revive the economy, underscores an all encompassing vision to secure the state’s future for sustainable prosperity.
Though that memorable statement was made, a year ago, precisely on October 1,2025 at the 65th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure, it still rings a loud and crisp-clear bell in the ears of the good people of the Sunshine State.
Worthy of note is that infrastructural development plays a pivotal role, especially in driving economic growth. It sets the stage and tone for robustness in economies, fostering an environment where businesses thrive. That is precisely so as employment rates soar and societal wellbeing is enhanced.
It would be recalled that the governor, stated back then that the state was witnessing a “remarkable transformation” and assured residents of even greater progress in the months ahead. Good enough, he has kept to his promise.
That indeed, is the essence of the key element of Trust which truly fosters unity in every relationship, more so between the political leaders and the led majority.
For instance, on road infrastructure and transportation, his administration has completed more than 200 kilometres of roads within the first 18-month period of hisremarkable tenure. The Ondo state government has commenced a 90-kilometre road rehabilitation programme covering all 18 local government areas. This is worthy of commendation. But there are more to be reckoned with.
For instance, under his service, the government has commenced the construction of the Oba Adesida Flyover in Akure to address traffic congestion. There are also ongoing inter-city dualisation projects which include the Akungba–Ikare Akoko road, Akure–Idanre as well as Okitipupa–Igbokoda roads.
Not done, there are three major dualisation projects being undertaken simultaneously across the state’s three senatorial districts. The government has completed and commissioned the inherited Onyearugbulem–Irese Flyover in Akure, upgraded rural roads connecting farming communities to markets through RAAMP and state-funded interventions. These are yet some noteworthy achievements that rhyme with the broad concept of utilizing infrastructural development as catalysts for socio-economic advancement.
That again echoes his thoughts on what these mean to Ondo state people. As he said about a year ago during the Independence Day celebration: “Roads are not just pathways; they are lifelines that will boost commerce and agriculture, reduce travel stress, and encourage economic activities and the daily life of our people,”
Those who benefit from the structures understand it. Such include the dualisation of Akure-Idanre, Akungba-Ikare, and Okitipupa-Igbokoda roads, the construction of jetties and walkways in riverine areas, and the rehabilitation/construction of five kilometres of roads, in each of the state’s 18 local government areas.
Breathing life into the infrastructures related to the healthcare delivery sector, the governor disclosed that his administration had expanded the state’s contributory health scheme, completed a pharma-grade warehouse to ensure medicine supply, renovated hospitals, and prioritised recruitment in the health sector.
Coming to the specifics with regards to the all-important education sector, the solid strides made include classroom rehabilitation, provision of instructional materials, bursaries and scholarships, digital learning initiatives, and the sustained operation of free shuttle buses and boats. This is simply awesome!
Expanding the scope on agriculture, the governor revealed that the state secured 26,000 hectares of land and earmarked ₦7.5 billion for agricultural development to strengthen food security and the creation of valuable jobs.
On the delicate issue of security, Governor Aiyedatiwa who stated that: “Our goal is that every citizen of Ondo state should feel safe in their homes, farms, markets, schools, and places of work,” has walked the talk. In that regard the government has provided 75 high-grade Hilux vehicles fitted with modern gadgets to security agencies.
So far, the fascinating features of the infrastructural development include the fact that they span across the wide spectrum of education, agriculture, healthcare delivery, transportation and security. The other aspect of course, is that they are evenly spread across the three Senatorial Districts of the state.
With the governor identifying the spirit of understanding of the people in what it takes to come up with these infrastructural development as achievements meant for improving on their Human Development Index, HDI such symbiotic relationship should be strengthened and sustained to move the state to greater heights.
