‘Lagbo Alaafia’: Funding, Bane Of Nigeria’s Healthcare System-OAU Don

A professor of medical science at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Joshua Ojo, has maintained that funding is the major problem of Nigeria healthcare.

The university Don spoke on Friday at Crown 101.5 fm, Ile-Ife, while fielding questions on ‘Lagbo Alaafia’, a town hall program on COVID-19 and the bounce back program, sponsored by CHESTRAD Global.

According to him, the Nigerian medical personnel are doing a yeoman’s job, but lack of adequate funding of the primary healthcare system has become a major setback.

He, however, urged that good nutrition and cleanliness are very important to keep the populace free from sicknesses and diseases.

He said; “ What we need most is hygiene and clean environment. Also we need good nutrition so that our body will be fortified against any disease and others will be taken care of by nature.

“ Our major problem is funding. What I saw when I visited Zamfara state and Ile-Ife during my research was encouraging. I’m impressed by the yeoman’s job our medical personnel are doing there, but the challenge is funding.”

Prof Ojo explained that there’s need to create awareness that it’s not yet uhuru.

“ We need to create awareness and be prepared. We should know that COVID-19 is still much around with us. So, we should not let down our guards’, he said.

The university don advised that we should keep proper records and be accountable to the foreign donors so as to encourage them to do more.
